Ultrasound examination for detecting fetal anomalies

Ultrasound examination performed at 20 weeks of pregnancy offers the possibility to examine the fetus and placenta, determine his/her sizes and lie, measure amniotic fluid level. At the beginning of the examination head, abdomen and extremities of fetus are measured. Measurements taken are entered to a special table and estimated fetal weight is calculated. During the same examination fetal heart rate is recorded, brain structures, vertebral column, intestines, and other internal organs are examined to exclude birth defects. This examination does not provide a guarantee that fetus will be absolutely healthy. We also make examination of placenta and measure amniotic fluid index. During the examination determination of gender is possible at your request.

How is the examination performed?

• Examination is performed by transabdominal approach at 18-22 weeks of gestational age.
• More detailed examination of fetal heart and brain structures is possible at this stage of pregnancy.

Which structures of fetus are examined during the examination?

Fetal heart, brain, structures of face, vertebral column, intestines, stomach, kidneys, extremities, fingers.

What information is obtained through this examination?

Indication for examination

This examination is recommended for all pregnant women.

How to prepare for the examination?

Urinary bladder should be filled in order to receive better images during transabdominal examination.

Measurement of cervical length

Determination of cervical length by ultrasound is indicated in pregnant women who are at risk of preterm delivery. This screening examination is performed at 17-24 weeks of gestational age.
