What is the purpose of Ultrasound Gynecological Examination?
Ultrasound gynceological examination is indicated for chronic pelvic and back pain, prolonged and excessive menstrual periods, pain during periods, for vaginal bleeding/spotting in between periods or after menopause. During examination uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes are visuilized and measurement of endometrial lining is perfomred.
Following diseases are diagnosed by performing ultrasound:
• Ovarian cysts
• Benign and malignant ovarian masses
• Polycystic ovarian syndrom (PCOS)
• Polyps
• Uterine fibroids
Serial ultrasound gynecological examinations are also used for monitoring of ovarian follicular maturation.
How is the examination performed?
This examination is performed through transabdominal and/or transvaginal approaches. It is recommended to have full urinary bladder before perfoming transabdominal ultrasound examination.
